The mountain passes of the Maestrazgo have, for the most part, a very similar profile. A fairly quiet first part, which is followed by considerable climbs. This affects their averages, which can be really misleading.
It would be the case of this ascent to the Puerto de Villarroya, which starts very quietly from Fortanete. Very gentle slopes on a rural road with very little vegetation and long straights.
We find signage of this port that gives us the most important data, such as its length, the average slope or the maximum slope, which will be 8%.
As soon as we reach the curvy area with the Barranco del Tajo on our right, comes the real part of the climb, fairly steady at around 6% and with some loose ramps at 8%.
As in all the passes that reach this altitude, the snow beacons begin to make an appearance before crowning, but not before facing another long straight, the Puerto de Villarroya. A few meters ahead we recommend you to visit its viewpoint.
