Crafts

Of the traditional craftsmanship, intimately linked in its origins to the needs of rural society, there are still some meritorious manifestations in forging, wood carving, ceramics and textiles. The esparto grass handicrafts of La Cuba, the rabbit fur hats of Tronchón, the potteries of Montoro, Cantavieja and Tronchón and, above all, the textile industry, spread throughout the region, were very popular. The textile craftsmanship of La Iglesuela del Cid, with table linen and bedspreads of thread or cotton woven on traditional looms dating back to the 18th century, was the last vestige of the manufacture of wool that, under the protection of its livestock wealth, was so popular in the Maestrazgo in past centuries. On the other hand, the production of the old potteries has been renewed and replaced by artistic, creative ceramics, with new techniques and designs.
