Tips for stargazing

Las recomendaciones que te damos desde comarca del Maestrazgo para una observación responsable de estrellas son las siguientes:

Location and hours

Choose a dark place, away from the light pollution of the towns. In the Maestrazgo region you will find different points and viewpoints for stargazing as it is an area of high altitudes and clear view of trees.

In order to make a good observation it is necessary to choose a good night time slot, from 22:00 to 07:00 in winter, and from 23:00 to 06:00 in summer.

Moon and weather

It is advisable to check the weather and the phases of the moon, as the light of a full moon can make visibility difficult. Also, it is important to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness, which may take about 20 minutes. Opt for very early new or crescent moon nights to maximize visibility of the stars and the Milky Way. Also on days when the moon is in the Waning Quarter the observation of the sky will be the most optimal thanks to the low illumination of the moon.

Clothing and equipment

The Maestrazgo region has its highest point at 1,424 meters above sea level, which means that its climate is determined by its altitude and relief. Summers are short and hot, while winters are cold and long. Thus, for the observation of the sky, it is essential to wear warm clothes. In the summer season, we recommend a jacket for the evening, because, although it is hot during the day, temperatures drop at dusk. In winter, you should be well wrapped up, as temperatures are very low and the wind blows strong.

Also bring a blanket or reclining chair and a flashlight with a red filter to preserve night vision. Something to snack on can also enhance the experience.

Optical instruments

To see the different phenomena, you can make use of magnifying instruments such as telescopes or binoculars, or with the naked eye. Keep in mind that to use an instrument you must be familiar with it. If you want to learn, there are always courses available to teach you how to use them. Our advice: Start with binoculars before investing in a telescope, and familiarize yourself with prominent constellations to build your celestial knowledge.

Observation diary

Keep a log. You can keep a journal of your observations to note what you see and when. This will help you learn and improve over time.

Silence and devices

Keep quiet and moderate the volume of electronic devices.

Astronomical community

Take advantage of community support: Join local amateur astronomer clubs to access resources, knowledge and shared observing events, enriching your learning experience.

Celestial events

Expect celestial events: Watch meteor showers and moving satellites, which can add excitement and awe to your skywatching adventures.

Patience and adaptation

Practice patience: Observing the sky requires time and patience for your eyes to adjust to the darkness. Spend time scanning the night sky and appreciating its beauty and mysteries.

Respect for the environment

And finally, do not leave trash or alter the natural environment. Respect the places for this type of activity.
