Ecotourism: Travel with meaning in the Maestrazgo region

At a time when we are increasingly aware of the impact of our travels, ecotourism is positioning itself as a way to discover the territory in a responsible, authentic and sustainable way. It is not only about visiting a place, but also about understanding it, respecting it and contributing to its conservation.

In Maestrazgo, this concept is not a passing trend, but a way of understanding tourism for years.

What is ecotourism?

Ecotourism is a form of sustainable tourism that takes place in natural areas, promoting environmental conservation, the well-being of the local population and the interpretation of natural and cultural heritage.

In essence, it involves traveling responsibly to natural places, minimizing environmental impact and generating benefits for local communities.

But ecotourism is much more than that: it is a way to connect with the territory, to live authentic experiences and to rediscover the value of simplicity.

Ecotourism philosophy and objectives

Ecotourism is based on a series of fundamental principles that differentiate it from other tourism models:

  • Conservation of the natural environment: protecting landscapes, biodiversity and resources
  • Respect for the local culture: enhancing the value of traditions, heritage and way of life
  • Sustainable development: generating economic opportunities without compromising the future
  • Environmental education: sensitizing visitors to the importance of caring for the environment

These objectives make ecotourism a key tool for rural development, especially in areas such as Maestrazgo, where nature and culture form an inseparable binomial.

How is ecotourism promoted?

The promotion of ecotourism requires collaboration between administrations, companies and the local population. Some of the keys to its development are:

  • Sustainable management of natural resources
  • The creation of responsible tourism experiences (hiking, interpretative routes, active tourism…).
  • Training and sensitization of both professionals and visitors.
  • Promotion of local and proximity products
  • Implementation of quality tools such as the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS).

This last point is especially relevant in Maestrazgo.

Ecotourism in Maestrazgo: commitment to sustainability

Maestrazgo is a territory committed to sustainable tourism, endorsed by its adherence to the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (CETS), a recognition that promotes a tourism model that respects the environment and benefits the local population.

Through CETS, companies, administrations and agents of the territory work together to:

  • Reducing the environmental impact of tourism activities
  • Improve the quality of the visitor experience
  • Promoting the local economy
  • Preserving natural and cultural heritage

This commitment is translated into concrete initiatives: signposted routes, interpretation centers, guided activities, responsible active tourism or the promotion of local gastronomy.

In Maestrazgo, the visitor not only travels through unique landscapes, but is also part of a tourism model that is committed to a balance between development and conservation.
