VISIT TO THE CHURCH OF SAN MIGUEL DE CASTELLOTE.

2 October 2021 | 8:00 pm 9:30 pm

Iglesia de San miguel, Castellote

Get to know the Church of San Miguel in Castellote from another perspective. The European Heritage Day, promoted by ARTECH, continues to be celebrated with a new visit to Castellote.

On Saturday, October 2 at 6:00 p.m., the visit will begin under the title: “Myths and stories of the Gothic doorway and ascent to the tower of San Miguel”. The activity is in addition to the celebration of San Miguel, a very popular festival in the town. At the end there will be a tasting of local products for the attendees.

The parish church dedicated to San Miguel was destroyed during the Civil War. In the following years, the roof was rebuilt and the damage was repaired. However, the religious celebrations were moved to the church of the Virgen del Agua.

The gothic temple had lost its baroque tower and was replaced a few years ago allowing access to views of Castellote, very attractive, but not everyone in the town knows.

This activity guided by Rita Pereira, the person in charge of tourism in Castellote, will allow us to approach the church of San Miguel from another point of view.

Angels, many vine leaves, mythological beings such as dragons or winged mermaids, a naked woman (representing Eve), a friar holding a woman by the waist,… are some of the secrets kept by this cover.

The façade was attributed by Santiago Sebastián to the first half of the 15th century, being previous to the neighboring church of Santa María de las Nieves de Molinos.

The activity is free, but it is necessary to register at the tourist office of Castellote.
