The Hospitalico was closed before the Civil War and the building had no use until it was renovated in 1995, at which time the goods it contained were moved. In 2018, the Tronchón Cultural Association opened the hospital’s coffers, which had been in the first floor of the town hall since it was moved. The trousseau of the hospital of Tronchón is especially valuable for the quantity and variety of pieces and its exceptional state of conservation, which make it unique in Aragón.
From that moment on, the city council asked for help from the Comarca del Maestrazgo. It is thought to recover the space of the old hospital recreating its function from the trousseau.
Thus, in the space of the Hospitalico we can find women’s and men’s shirts, bandages, cotton, cloths, towels, blankets and sheets that were kept in the coffers. There were also stored mattresses, mattresses, pillows, as well as a wooden stretcher with strings, another one with a cover and another one to transport the sick.
We can get an idea of what hospital care was like from the existence of a good number of urinals and spittoons, a bundle with numerous bandages and menstrual cloths, as well as towels and even a zinc bathtub and a barber’s chair that the surgeon would be obliged to use for shaving on Saturdays, Sundays and the eve of holidays.
For the preparation and distribution of the food, numerous pieces of pottery were needed that have not been preserved. And to serve it, there are pots, jugs, a tortera, a fruit bowl, porcelain plates and cups from different times. Some of the ceramic pieces probably come from local workshops that had a large production until well into the twentieth century and a high degree of sophistication. A bowl of soup and some chocolate used to be handed out in the hospitals of the region.
