Combat in the river gorge

Nestled in the valley and surrounded by deep gorges formed by the erosion of water, Pitarque will see passing through its term in the early days of the war the Baron of Hervés in his flight to Lower Aragon. Later, important leaders such as Carnicer, Cabrera and Quílez would be supported here. A place of refuge when the Carlists were harassed in more open places, it will be the scene of one of the final battles of the war.
It was led by the liberal colonel Martín Zurbano who, taking advantage of the fact that the valley lacked an exit, surrounded and defeated the troops led by the Carlist commander José Saavedra. The result was the destruction of two of Cabrera’s best companies and the capture of 428 prisoners and numerous weapons.

Surprise from above

To dissuade the inhabitants of the towns from joining the faction, the liberal authorities ordered at the end of 1835 the seizure of the property of all those who had left with the Carlists.

Colonel Martin Zurbano (1788-1845), a progressive military legendary for his mastery of guerrilla tactics, had arrived at the front of the Maestrazgo, at the end of 1839, with the mission of establishing the siege of the fort of Segura.

The final assault of the liberal troops on the heart of Maestrazgo, that is to say, Cantavieja and Morella, passed through the progressive capture of the Carlist fortresses that perimetered and protected the rebel territory.

At the beginning of April 1840 the liberal operations against the castle of Aliaga were taking place.
