Visiting the Maestrazgo is an adventure! Beautiful villages, breathtaking landscapes, starry nights, tranquility, gastronomy… Keep in mind that you are coming to what is known as “empty Spain”, a territory of small villages of between 10 and 700 inhabitants, and so that you can make the most of your getaway we give you 7 tips.
Ready? Here we go!
- Reservations at the restaurants where you want to have lunch or dinner.
Surely when you come here you have booked accommodation. We also recommend that you make reservations at the restaurants and cafes where you want to have lunch or dinner, as they are small, family-run establishments, and are usually in high demand, especially on weekends.
- Try the “km 0” products
Find out if in the village you are visiting there are any small stores, bakeries or food stores and their opening hours to buy the rich products of the territory in the municipality.
- Whenever you go out in the mountains, always let us know where you are going.
When you go mushroom hunting, hiking, mountain biking or similar, it is a good idea to let someone know where you are going, especially if you are alone or in a couple. It is also useful to carry a remote tracking device.
- We recommend that you bring cash.
The villages are small and many of them do not have ATMs (only in Cantavieja, La Iglesuela del Cid and Castellote), and not all establishments accept credit cards (less and less), so it is good to bring some money.
- Come with a full tank of gas.
It is advisable to come with a full tank of gas to go and return to your destination or to find out about the gas stations in the territory and their schedules to calculate when and where to fill up.
- Make sure you have cell phone and internet coverage.
If you are going to need to connect, ask your host what coverage the town has and if they have wifi in the accommodation. In unpopulated areas not all operators have lines and sometimes, with bad weather, we have problems with mobile or data coverage.
- Medical assistance.
There is 24-hour emergency service in Cantavieja and Villarluengo. In the rest of the municipalities the doctors have limited opening hours and on weekdays. It is advisable to travel with the medication you usually take. If you need to buy something you have pharmacies in Villarroya de los Pinares, Cantavieja, La Iglesuela del Cid, Molinos and Castellote. Check which pharmacies are on duty during the weekend.
Doesn’t it seem like you are coming to do a gymkhana? It is not that bad, but it is advisable to be cautious, especially on weekends and long weekends, and take into account all this so that your experience in Maestrazgo is ten.
And, for any questions you may have, do not hesitate to contact the Tourist Offices of the territory. They will solve any doubts you may have or will try to help you.
We are a hospitable region and we are delighted to have you visit us.
We are waiting for you in Maestrazgo!
