Today we bring you a Did you know that…? about the villages of the Maestrazgo region with some facts and curiosities that maybe you didn’t know. Let’s get to know them!
The Maestrazgo region comprises a total of 22 population entities: fifteen municipalities, one minor local entity and six districts. Its capital is Cantavieja.
2. In 2022, the village with the most inhabitants was Cantavieja with a total of 707. Miravete de la Sierra is the least populated with only 27 inhabitants. In total, the region has around 3,200 inhabitants.
3. Regarding sea level, Allepuz is the highest village in the region, located at 1,424 meters above sea level, followed very closely, with only 2 meters difference, by Cañada de Benatanduz. CastelloteCastellote, at 804 meters above sea level, is the lowest.

4. Stacking one on top of the others, we would achieve a height of more than 17,000 meters above sea level.
5. CastelloteCastellote, the village with the lowest altitude in the region, is the largest in terms of surface area, occupying 235.18 km2, and includes the territory of its six districts and a smaller local entity, Las Cuevas de Cañart. La Cuba is the smallest, with 6.51 km2of extension.

6. If we fit the villages together, the total area would be more than 1,204 km2.
7. Las Cuevas de Cañart is the only minor local entity in the province of Teruel, but Aragón has a total of 43, 39 in Huesca and 3 in Zaragoza. These entities have full legal personality and capacity to exercise the powers recognized by law.
8. Of the 16 villages, 8 of them have been declared Historic-Artistic Ensemble, due to the stupendous conservation of their old quarters. The monumental wealth of the Maestrazgo is evident.
9. In the region we find two of the most beautiful villages in Spain, Cantavieja and Mirambel, and two magical villages, La Iglesuela del Cid and Fortanete.
10. The region has four areas declared Natural Monuments of the six in Aragón: Grutas de Cristal, Nacimiento del río Pitarque, Órganos de Montoro and Puente Natural de Fonseca. The other two are the Pyrenean Glaciers and the Mallos de Riglos, Agüero and Peña Rueba.
