12 months, 12 reasons for coming to Maestrazgo

The Maestrazgo region has many charms and attractions that make it a great destination to enjoy any time of the year. Now that 2024 begins we show you twelve reasons, one per month, to visit and live the Maestrazgo.

We begin with January, the month of fire and festivities, as it is marked by the celebration of San Antonio, patron saint of animals, but also San Macario or Santa Brígida. In almost all the towns bonfires are lit, the animals are blessed, popular dinners, rondallas, tranzas or auctions are celebrated, the devils are enjoyed and other manifestations of the festivities. Come and enjoy the traditions most loved by the neighbors!

February is a month associated with Valentine’s Day, love will be present in the most romantic streets and corners of Maestrazgo, you just have to look for them… Love is in the air!

The month of March is ideal to visit the magnificent exponents of the geology of Maestrazgo. The region is part of the Geopark of Maestrazgo and has places as significant as the Organs of Montoro or the Crystal Caves of Molinos, which you can not miss on your visit.

April is the month in which spring explodes to bring us colors, smells and textures. We invite you to walk the trails of Maestrazgo and be attentive to the species that bloom and the birds that frequent them. Learn to observe them and get to know their habits, customs and beauty.

May is an intense month. Many villages in the region celebrate traditional pilgrimages. It begins at the end of April with the pilgrimage of San Marcos in Villarluengo and the first of May with that of the Llovedor de Castellote, perhaps the best known and most ritualistic. These are followed by many others in a continuous flow of people along the roads to the hermitages or shrines of reference: La Virgen del Cid, Santa Isabel de Sollavientos, Buen Suceso, El Rollo… All with their ancestral rituals that you will love to know.

In June the queens of the Maestrazgo meadows are the orchids. These small flowers, distinguished by their complexity, are sometimes difficult to find, but with a little patience you can discover them and get to know them.

July is a quiet month in Maestrazgo. The good temperatures invite you to go out and walk the trails, especially the riverside, cooler, and where you can also take a dip in the rivers, but always with caution!

In August, with the heat and the magnificent starry nights, what you feel like is “going out in the cool”, that is, in the evenings, to walk under the moonlight, observe the sky and, why not, join the many festivals held in the villages and where the night dances are the protagonists. An interesting way to get to know the Maestrazgo and its inhabitants!

After the festive maelstrom, September is already calling for a bit of relaxation, return to the roads, enjoy the scenery … And in Maestrazgo we make it easy for you. The cycle “Maestrazgo, landscape of music” invites you to feel the landscapes of the territory accompanied by classical music, a spectacle for the senses!

To think of October is to think of the delicious robellón, the Lactarius Deliciosus, which grows in our mountains, and all the other mushrooms that we can find. Hoping to have a good mycological season, we invite you to come to the mycological reserve of Maestrazgo, to walk through its mountains, to know the mushrooms, to collect them and, of course, to taste them in the restaurants of the area!

November always leaves us wonderful and colorful prints in the forests and riverbanks. The yellows, greens, browns, shine like never before, evoking almost fantastic landscapes and landscapes of the soul that overwhelm us. This month is ideal to enjoy the colors and landscapes, riding one of the routes of the Centro BTT Maestrazgo with your bike.

And finally, December. This month is the time when the Hispanic goat, a famous inhabitant of our region, begins its rut, producing fights between the impressive males to get the favor of the females of the group. We invite you to try to observe them and learn about their habits by visiting the different viewpoints of the territory and trying to spot the groups with the help of binoculars.
