He took up arms following the family tradition and gained prestige fighting on the northern front. Despite his youth, in 1839 he received the command of the Army of the Center, taking Aliaga, Alcalá de la Selva and Cantavieja. Subsequently, he will have an important political career that will lead him to the presidency of the Council of Ministers.
