Brother of the pretender Charles VII, he had fought as a papal Zouave in defense of Rome against Garibaldi’s forces. In the last war he was general in chief of the forces of Catalonia and, later, of the Center, at the head of which he ordered the attacks on Teruel, Cuenca and Alcañiz.
